Maternity Photography Style Guide & Checklist
Congratulations on this incredible journey! I’m so excited to capture this special moment in your life. This guide will help you prepare for your maternity session, ensuring it’s a relaxed and memorable experience.
What to Expect During Your Session
Timing:
The best time for maternity photos is between 28-36 weeks. At this stage, your belly is beautifully round, and you’ll still feel comfortable enough to enjoy the session.Session Duration:
Sessions generally last 1-2 hours, giving us plenty of time to capture a variety of poses, outfits, and settings.Studio or Outdoors:
We can shoot in my home studio for those clean styled images, or at an outdoor location trialed & trusted by me. Each setting offers unique opportunities to create stunning portraits.Comfort First:
Your comfort is my top priority. I’ll continuously check in with you throughout the session to ensure you feel at ease and enjoy the process.
What to Wear
To dress or not to dress... is always the question! Here are some tips and suggestions to help you decide:
Clothing Options:
Gowns:
Choose from my curated collection of stunning gowns designed to flatter your silhouette. You’re welcome to select more than one to experiment with different looks.Maxi Dresses:
Flowing maxi dresses with high waistlines or slits work beautifully. Look for fabrics with texture, like lace or sheer materials.Two-Piece Outfits:
Long, flowy skirts paired with crop tops or bandeau bras create gorgeous, timeless looks.Cosy Knits:
Knit pieces add a soft, intimate touch to your photos.Semi-Nude or Nude:
If you’re leaning towards a more raw and natural look, semi-nude or nude shots can highlight your beautiful curves. Moisturise your belly beforehand for a radiant glow.
Colour Palette:
Once we’ve chosen the location, we can discuss colour palettes to help you stand out against the environment. Neutral tones, soft pastels, and earthy shades work well for timeless portraits.
Avoid:
Prints, logos, or bright colours that can distract from the focus of the image – you!
Hair, Makeup, and Nails
Makeup:
Whether you’re treating yourself to a professional makeup session or doing it yourself, go for a natural, glowing look.Hair:
Loose waves, soft curls, or a neat bun work beautifully. Choose a style that makes you feel confident and comfortable.Nails:
A subtle manicure can make a big difference. Since your hands will frame your belly in many shots, avoid chipped polish or bold colours that may draw attention away from the overall image.

Here’s a checklist to help you pack for your session:
Your own maxi dress or outfits (if you’d like to incorporate personal clothing).
